Building an Interactive Map of the Roman Empire

It’s always interesting to see how the maps change throughout history, they are one of the most powerful visual ways to see historic information. Below is an example of a map for the Roman Empire, which lasted a few centuries and included large territorial holdings around the Mediterranean Sea in Europe, North Africa and West Asia.

The plugin itself doesn’t include a map of Roman Empire regions, but since we can use custom geoJson files, after some online search I came across a map for it which I then adapted to use with the plugin, also using the overlay option to display it in the normal world map focused on the Mediterranean sea.

Live filter on map with vector icons

The challenge today was to replicate an existing map that a client already had online in a website, but needed more flexibility. Requirements:

For this project we used the overlay technique, which allows us to display multiple maps in the same base map and filter them if necessary either with a legend or an external live filter. So we create 4 maps:

  • Map for International Projects
  • Map for National Projects
  • Map for Biennials
  • Base map, with the 3 maps above in overlay

This is the result:

  • All
  • Bienals
  • International Projects
  • Nacional Projects

It’s worth noting also that we used the option to load content from a raw data source, a specific CSV format. This allowed us to import the data from the already existing map.

If you want to replicate a specific map let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

World map with UK sub-countries and Tibet overlay

There are many versions of the world map and some countries can be represented in different ways. The UK for example is represented as a unique country, but it’s made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which often are required to be represented individually. For these special cases we can explore the overlay feature to display other maps in the available world map. Below we added a map of UK divided by regions and a map for the region of Tibet, to be displayed as an individual region also.

To have Tibet as an individual entry, we created a map of China where we selected only the Tibet region to display. Then we used that map with a single region in the world map as an overlay.

US and Canada divided by regions

With Interactive Geo Maps Pro you can display multiple maps together using the overlay feature. You just need to create each map separately and then in one of them instruct to load the other one. We used this feature to create a map of United States of America divided by states together with the map of Canada divided by provinces and territories.

To achieve the result above you need to create 2 maps. One for the US and another one for Canada and create the interactivity you want in the regions or add markers. Once you have the 2 maps, you can edit one of them and in the ‘Overlay’ section simply select the other map. That map will now display both maps together.

You can set different colors and click actions for each individual state or marker in both maps.

There are several interactive maps plugins for WordPress, but for sure this is one of the features that sets this plugin apart from the others. Check out the full list of features available in the Pro version.
